A couple of friends of mine always go to Kilkenny Irish Pub at 3630 Brentwood Road NW so I thought why not do a Nacho Review? People tell me the Irish Potato Nachos are great but I am a purist so I went with the traditional stuff. Chips and Cheese! How did they do? Find out right now!

Nachos.

This is where it all starts! These chips were on the thin side and tasted pretty generic. They weren’t bad but they also weren’t chips you’d die for either. Sometimes you would get one that was a little oily and tasted like cardboard or paper (quality paper though not your regular printing kind…) but overall they almost always tasted like tortilla’s.

Toppings

These Nachos had Tomatoes, Onions, Jalapeno’s and a Three Cheese Blend which tasted like Mozzarella, Cheddar, and maybe Monteray Jack and Sour Cream and Salsa. No olives. I’m biased because growing up Italian olives are like gold and when Nacho’s don’t have any olives Nacho Joe get’s sad. Whilst eating Nachos I noticed that these were Darwinist Nachos. The Cheese used the process of natural selection to determine which lucky Nachos were fortunate enough to receive a coat of cheese to keep them warm and which Nachos did not. There were a lot of unfortunate Nachos and a couple of survivors. Somehow a glop of Cheese landed on 2 very lucky Nachos and didn’t get around to the others. I felt bad for the cold, sad, and naked Nachos. However in all seriousness when these Nachos did have cheese on them they were delicious. Also despite the chips being thin, and the tomatoes being very juicy and fresh the Nachos didn’t fall under the pressure. They managed to not get soggy. I was quite pleased with this sturdy chip achievement. Kilkenny gets an automatic plus 1 point for this.

This is the Platter Version... A lot of Nachos here.

There are a couple of Nachos that have cheese on them but I would have liked to see a bit more... but the toppings look delicious! Very fresh!

$Price$

Now, now, now. This is where a lot of Nachos fall short. If you charge over $15 for Nachos then they need tons of cheese. If you charge over $20 they must be made of the purist of golds. These Nachos cost a tender $14.99 for the small version and for the platter they cost $21.99. I have had a lot of Nachos. Trust me. I feel like this price is a bit inflated. The smaller version feeds up to 4 people for an appetizer but if you have more than 4 hungry Nacho lovers get the platter. They do taste good and I noticed the platter version did seem to have a lot more cheese and the toppings were spread out better. I did try the platter on a different day so maybe a rookie was working the kitchen the day I had the small plate… remember my Nacho Joe followers, Nachos are always inconsistant, unless you go to Moxies where I watch the chefs measure the cheese and toppings. Those are the only Nachos you can depend on as far as I know…

Presentation

These Nachos look nice. In fact they are my favorite Nacho look yet. This picture is on my phone as my background as you read (Actually depending on when you read it might have changed as time does go by and I like to change my Nacho phone background…) I will let you be the judge though!

These are the Nachos being reviewed, they look nice but they aren't layered and all the Jalapeno's are in the middle. But they look great!

Summary

If you get the Nachos that have cheese and toppings on them then these are delicious! The Jalapeno’s are a bit spicy so SNJW! (Spicy Nacho Joe Warning) But after throwing around numbers amongst my Nacho Sidekicks we decided that these Nachos are a strong 7/10. We go very often and they are always a bit different, sometimes they are a 9, others they are a 5. So be careful! If you get them on a 9 day then you are lucky and really enjoy them! That’s all for now! Thanks Nacho Followers. Your loyalty is humbling!

Julio’s Barrio

The Quest

NachoJoe rates Julio’s Barrio 8/10

NachoJoe rates Julio’s Barrio 8/10

Here we go again! I set out to have Nachos with some good friends of mine at Julio’s Barrio on 101 10 Street NW. We laughed, we cried and we had some Nachos. Did the Nacho’s keep the laughing going? Or did we start to cry because of them? Read the review to find out!

Nachos.

The chips were crispy and had a flavour. But I have to admit I was kind of sad becasue they were only one color. However they were tasty so they get points! I would have liked to see some tri color action going on. Or another color. It’s always nice when Nachos are colorful!

Toppings

The Nachos had various toppings. Tomatoes, Onions, Olives (And those of you who have followed the blog know that I love olives), Jalapenos, and Cheese. The cheese was good and tasty and the toppings tasted fresh. The dips that came with the Nachos were Salsa and Sour Cream. There are also 3 big scoops of house made Guacamole that sit atop the Nacho platter. Also you can choose from various salsa’s at Julios. They range from Mild to Nuclear. If you have the Nuclear salsa make sure you have a generous scoop of sour cream to get your taste buds happy again. This was nice that everything is included and gives them a very authentic messy feel like the one’s I have had in Mexico.

However one must always be careful with Messy Nachos. Because Messy doesn’t always mean delicious. In Julio’s case, they pass, but be weary Nacho lovers. Some places will use the messy tactic to replace the sufficient and acceptable amount of cheese.

$Price$

The Nachos are a generous portion and they say 2-4 amigos can enjoy them! They cost $14.00 and they come with Guacamole. Most places charge extra but they didn’t! Nacho Joe is happy. Hopwever there could have been more cheese on these Nachos. We did find a few very sad Nachos.

Presentation

I thought these nachos looked very impressive and combined the messy and clean look together to make something beautiful. Check it out!

I like the Guacamole scoops, looks like Ice Cream!

Summary

Well here it is. I have to say these were one of the hardest reviews I had to do. It was a good thing I had lots of helpers. Thanks Friends! In the end though Nacho Joe came with the conclusion of an 8/10. They were good, but they could have used more cheese and possibly flavor too. I have had tastier Nachos. However the biggest positive is that all dips are included! The messy factor is tricky to rate as well! I will have to go back a couple of times so I recommend you go out to Julio’s Barrio and try them yourselves. Send me an Email of what you think. It’s a tough one!

The Den

NachoJoe rates The Den (U of C) 7/10

A big group of sidekicks and I went for Nachos once again. This time we chose to go to The Den located in the MacEwan Centre at the University of Calgary. The Den is a great place to hang out, but is it a great place to eat Nachos? Check out the review to find out!

Nachos.

These were great Nachos. They weren’t soggy and they held there toppings well. None of them seemed to be burned and there were plenty of them. They were delicious!

Toppings

Well this was definitely a strong point for these Nachos. They had your basic toppings but there were lots of them!  The Nachos also had olives on them! That was a high point for me. I go to The Den quite a bit and these Nachos have always been delicious. I think thats because of the cheese they put on them. I’m not sure what kind it is but its very rich and it tastes really good. There isn’t cheese on every single Nacho so that was a downfall in my books. When I make Nachos at home I put cheese on every single one! If I can do it then professional chefs at restaurants can do it too! To focus on the positives though, these Nachos do taste really good.

$Price$

At the price of $13.75 it really isn’t bad at all! Although I have to say I have been to The Den for Nachos a few times and they do have a problem with consistency! Sometimes you will get really good Nachos with tons of cheese, and other times they will be dry nachos. So not a bad price, but keep it consistent!

Presentation

These Nachos look very nice. I especially like the checkered wax paper, take a look!

Yum!

However right off the bat I see Nachos with no toppings on them... sad Nachos...

They looked pretty good so they get a fair score in this category…

Summary

Well overall I enjoyed these Nachos while I was eating them. The downfall was that at the end of the Nacho fiesta our hands were very greasy. The bottom of the wax paper was also very greasy. When you eat these Nachos you have to be very hungry because they are very heavy. There was enough toppings and just enough cheese to make these Nachos worth it though! But then again there is that consistency problem. I am going to have to give the Den a 7/10. Sometimes though they might be a 10, or maybe a 5… so make sure to judge these Nachos carefully!

Keep eating Nachos!

Loco Lou’s

The Quest

NachoJoe rates Loco Lou's 7/10

NachoJoe rates Loco Lou's 7/10

Wow… I’ve reviewed too many Nachos lately! My stomach needs a break! My good friend from Saskatchewan was in town so I got a Nacho Review Sidekick Team (NRST) together to help me with rating Loco Lou’s Nachos! Loco Lou’s is on 1324 16 Avenue NW. My sidekicks were all pumped to try the Nachos and so was I! How did it go? Read the review to find out!

Nachos.

Well the description of the Nachos on the menu said that the chips were “Jalapeno and Tomato Basil Nachos.” I was expecting a taste from these Nachos. When they are described to me in the menu I expect a flavor of some sort. But alas these were just your run of the mill red and green chips. There were also regular white corn Nachos as well. These chips were funny though. They weren’t really crunchy, they were “snappy.” Also the Nachos seemed to be a little to week to hold the toppings. It was not the best chip experience…

Toppings

Well I have to say, these Nachos had a lot of toppings. They had onions, green peppers, tomatoes, jalapenos, and green peppers. I haven’t had green peppers on Nachos yet! I was pleasantly surprised! The green peppers were good! The cheese mix on these Nachos was a Mozzarella and Cheddar mix. However we had the same problem… there was lots of cheese on the top of the Nacho plate but once you got to the middle the cheese was either burned or non-existent. I was sad once again. But there were plenty of other toppings and dip to eat with the unfortunate Nachos that had no cheese on them.

$Price$

At $13.99 for the big “Nachos Grande” plate you can’t really go wrong. Especially when you have a big group of people with you! Anything extra though like beef, chicken, and guacamole is an extra $2.99. I felt like this was a little expensive because most places I have been too so far charge $0.99-$1.99. But the Nachos themselves with no extras are a very good price!

Presentation

Well they looked beautiful… check them out!

They had lots of cheese on the top but not so much in the middle of the layers!

The cheese was not on every Nacho... I felt bad for the Nachos that had no cheese, they were naked! Poor things!

I really got excited when I saw these! As we ate them though the cheese disappeared! Also I got a good bunch of flimsy soggy Nachos. This was very sad because it felt like I was eating a regular Tortilla… but I was eating Nachos!

Summary

I had high expectations for these Nachos! They looked really good and when the Nachos weren’t soggy and had toppings on them they were delicious! The addition of Green peppers into the regular toppings was nice but it didn’t save these nachos! There was just enough dip to accommodate for the size of the Nachos and the top had plenty of cheese. Loco Lou’s just needs to study the art of layering cheese. The bottom and middle didn’t really have enough of the good stuff! I have to give Loco Lou’s Nachos Grande a 7/10. More crispy chips, more cheese, and toppings in the middle would have upped the score on these!

Where are you 10/10 Nachos! I’m excited to taste you! Help me find them! Gimme an email at nacho.joe@hotmail.com or comment on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/nachojoereviews!

My stomach is saying go eat more Nachos but my body is telling me no! Time for some shredded lettuce… Being a Nacho critic is tough work! Go out and get some Nachos! If you find good ones let me know!

Moose Maguires

The Quest

NachoJoe rates Moose Maguires 6/10

NachoJoe rates Moose Maguires 6/10

Today my trusty sidekick Pastayoyo and I went on another adventure together! We decided to venture on over to Moose Maguires Beanery and Bar on 1941 Uxbridge Dr Nw. Guess what we ordered? Were the Nachos good? Were they rad or sad? Read the review to find out!

Nachos.

Well these were one of the high points to these Nachos. The chips were thin but they had a great crunch! They also tasted really good! When the Nachos didn’t have cheese on them you could just eat the them with sour cream, salsa, or guacamole and they still tasted delicious! Yum!

Toppings

Once again we had typical toppings. Tomatoes, green onions, and Jalapenos. Once again no olives to be found on these Nachos! I was quite sad to not get Olives on my Nachos once again. I have been foiled twice! The cheese on these nachos tasted really good. It tasted like Colby Cheddar and White Cheddar or some kind of really sharp mozzarella. The best part of these Nachos was that they were tasty!

$Price$

At $12.99 its a pretty good deal. You get quite a bit of Nachos for the price. However the biggest problem about these Nachos is the lack of cheese. It seemed like all the nachos in the center had cheese on them but around the edges there was nothing. I could put my hands around the side, and the nachos would move around. They didn’t stick together, and that’s because they didn’t have cheese on them! It was about a 50/50 shot of getting a nacho with cheese or without. This was a major downer because these nachos had me! I thought they were really delicious until I started finding lots of dry nachos.

The other big problem with these nachos was that the cheese  was stuck to the pan.

It's a shame that all this cheese was on the bottom and not on the nachos!

To make things worse you couldn’t even scrape the cheese off this pan because of the hard surface. It would have been nice to maybe put some wax paper underneath these nachos so the cheese could peel off easily.

Presentation

Well in the words of my faithful sidekick Pastayoyo “They looked very impressive.” Check  out the picture!

They look nice right?

Summary

Well these Nachos were tasty, they looked good, and for a large portion of Nachos they were $12.99. Unfortunately they took a big cut in my final score because they barely had any cheese on them! The worst part was most of the cheese that should have been on the nachos ended up stuck to the bottom of the pan! Because of the lack of wax paper I couldn’t even peel the cheese off. The bonus was there was plenty of dip for the nachos that had no cheese on them. But I’m not reviewing plain nachos and dip, I’m reviewing nachos that are covered in cheese. So sadly I have to give these nachos a 6/10.

I’m still in hot pursuit of finding that 10/10 plate of Nachos! Can you tell me where I can find them? Let me know!

Until the next review!

Nacho Joe 😛
